"But I don't want to get out of bed..."

Goals.  We all have them but we don't always follow through on them.  I don't know about you, but for me "Creating" the goal is the easiest and most fun part.  I am a dreamer so sitting down and envisioning things I would like to accomplish in life is a treat.  It's not hard for me to picture myself doing anything because nothing is unrealistic for me.

 

Follow through, well that's a whole other beast.  Follow through requires action and consistency.  Action I'm pretty good at - once someone kicks me in the butt, consistency on the other hand used to be my downfall.  Some people call it boredom, some call it lack of willpower but now that I know better I call it lack of setting up the conditions for inevitable success.

 

Now that I am a coach and practice the steps of creating and achieving a goal I understand better what needs to happen in order for success to be the outcome.  Before you can successfully reach your goals you need to set yourself up to succeed.  There are 3 important components that are required to make this happen: 1. The right System 2. The right Support 3. The right Accountability.

 

1. The right System means that you are taking the proper steps at the proper time to ensure you don't do too much right out of the gate and overwhelm yourself- this often leads to giving up because it feels too hard.

 

2. The right Support means that you have someone encouraging you along the way when you come up against obstacles or feel stuck.  Support is not meant to coddle and make things easier but to remind you that you are worth showing up for yourself when you forget.

 

3. Lastly, the right Accountability means that when, NOT IF you fall off track (because there will always be the time when old habits creep in and try to take you off course) there will be someone there to hold you accountable and remind you why you chose to reach for this/these goal(s) in the first place.

 

As a Coach this is what my job is all about and why I love it so much.  I understand the difficulties that come with changing old habits and believing that you are worthy of creating new ones that serve you better.  I am not perfect by any means and I am still learning and stretching myself daily too.  I don't have it all figured out but I now know how to navigate it all better.  

 

One of my current goals is to include more body movement into my daily life.  I love how weight lifting and group exercise classes make me feel. I love challenging my body to see what it can do. Moving my body makes me feel stronger, lighter, more agile and like I could take on the world, and all that it throws at me.  It has taken me some time to understand that my old relationship with exercise and movement was motivated by different desires than what I have now.  Now I move my body when I want and how I want so that it brings me joy.  I don't use it as a way to justify what I can eat or as a way to try and change how my body looks. It took me most of my life to get here and I know I am ready to bring movement back into my life on a bigger scale for the right reasons. 

 

This morning I got up at 5 am and defrosted my car so I could drive to the rec centre and do my first Spin Class.  I sat at the front.  I watched myself in the mirror.  I felt pride in what my body was capable of after being on pause for so long.  I got home just as the sun was rising and greeted my daughter (still in her PJ's) at the front door who very excitedly asked me if I had fun.  When the alarms went off I wanted to stay in bed and sleep more, in fact I went back and forth with myself at rapid fire speed and for every good reason to get up there was a great reason to stay in bed.  Then as I felt my tired self almost about to win I asked myself "What would you tell one of your clients who was struggling with finding motivation?"  That's simple, I would ask them this 1 question: "Why is this important to you?" With that I jumped out of bed because I know why this is important to me.  There are so many reasons, one of which is being able to show my daughter that movement, even before sunrise can be fun and that it, along with my/your-self, is worth getting out of bed for.
